Dr. Fox got a taste of his own medicine after getting a shot in his foot earlier this afternoon. This was part the demonstration the office was trained for in the new technology known as Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP. PRP is the newest procedure in “Orthobiologics” where platelets from your blood are separated out between your red and white blood cells. The platelets are then injected into your pain site, which can include Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, heel pain, tendon ruptures and even ankle sprains. The procedure lasts around 20 minutes in the office, and is another way in which pain can be treated without multiple shots, or if other past treatments were not effective. This procedure “invigorates” your own blood cells, therefore allowing your body to heal itself. Essentially, when your blood platelets are activated, there are growth factors, which are released as healing proteins. These accelerate tissue vascularity and increase the rate of tissue production. That being said, PRP can also increase the rate of wound healing. The platelets are able to attract other cells that fight off infection, work as a seal during closures and even act as a hemostatic agent, which decreases bleeding. PRP aids in osteogenesis, which is bone regeneration and repair. This is a natural procedure that allows the patient to witness modern medicine. Dr. Fox was the Ginea pig in our office; he was able see his blood get separated in the Magellan® Autologous Platelet Separator. His platelets were then injected into his pain site, his heel, and was able to get back to seeing patients right after. The procedures outcome is typically 6 weeks, compared to the treatments that can take up to 12 weeks. If PRP is something you are considering as a treatment option, feel free to browse the following websites to learn more about it! We are happy to use this procedure on our patients to decrease pain and increase the knowledge on new unique and natural procedures!
