How to diagnose heel pain | Long Island podiatristHeel pain is, far and away, the No. 1 painful foot condition we see at our office—that’s why we call ourselves Long Island Heel Pain specialists.

But that doesn’t mean we can get complacent or that it gets boring! The truth is that every foot is different, and there are myriad factors—external pressures, internal structures, medical conditions, and more—that can contribute to painful heels. The symptoms may be similar, but getting to the bottom of the case and making the right diagnosis is the key to getting you the relief you need.

Diagnosing Heel Pain

Part of that process is a physical examination. We’ll check your heel and the surrounding area for signs of tenderness, bruising, swelling, and other problems, noting the severity and location of each. We may also ask you to perform some simple exercises and physical tests, like standing on one foot. If we deem necessary, further diagnostic technology may be implemented: an X-ray to look for any breaks or cracks in bone, for example, or an ultrasound to assess the health of soft tissue structures.

We’ll also ask you a series of questions to try to build a “profile” of sorts for your painful heel. Where, exactly, is your pain located? How long have you had it? Is it worst in the early morning, during activity, or after activity? Do you play any sports or have any active hobbies? What types of shoes do you normally wear? These sorts of questions help us really get a sense of what contributing factors may be the most significant in your case—and help us emphasize which treatment and prevention strategies will likely be most effective.
